Dr. William Jameson, Jr. Obituary (2017)

Dr. William John Jameson, Jr., of Loudonville, NY and Beaufort, died on April 5, 2017. He was born in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on July 30, 1924. He is survived by his wife Judith Latch Jameson, married nearly 50 years, and his son William John Jameson III of New York. Dr. Jameson was reared in Manipay, Ceylon. As a child, he and his esteemed father, a missionary doctor, had tea with the Nobel Prize winning civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi. When he returned to the U.S. he graduated from Nott Terrace High School as well as Union College and New York Medical College, New York City. He was inducted into the US Navy in 1942. During his service he was in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater, including the battle of Guadalcanal, (1942-1943). There he was a Corpsman. He was a Scout and Raider (Navy Seal) until his shoulder injury and then went on to pilot LSMs. He did not share many of his wartime experiences but he was very proud of his service and the people with whom he served. Dr. Jameson practiced medicine for over fifty years, specializing in obstetrics and gynecological surgery in Schenectady, NY. He served as Chief of Staff at Bellevue Hospital for Women and delivered about 15,000 babies. He received the Physician of the Year Award in 1990 and received a Golden Diploma from NY Medical College in 2001. Though widely recognized for his many achievements, Dr. Jameson was a private and unassuming man. His compassionate care and love of his patients were the guiding principles of his practice. Services will be held at the Parish Church of St. Helena on Wednesday, April 19th 2017, at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall. Interment will be in New York at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the following: Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Parish Church of St. Helena, or the Friends of Beaufort Library.
