William Franklin Hanks Jr., 84, of Fripp Island, SC, formerly of Knoxville, TN, passed away Friday, January 11, 2019 at his residence.\nGraveside services will be held in Statesville, NC at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday January 17, 2019 at Oakwood Cemetery, 114 Oakwood Dr. Statesville, NC 28677. The celebration of life service will be Friday January 18, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 4904 Asheville Highway Knoxville, TN 37914. Friends and family visitation following the service.\nMr. Hanks was born on October 15, 1934 in Raleigh, NC. He attended Central High School in Charlotte, NC and did a year at Fishbourne Military Academy. He graduated from Furman University where he was a Sigma Alpha Epsilon and a member of the varsity basketball team. At Furman he met the love of his life, the SAE sweetheart, Beth Brunson Ballentine. He was a lover of Tennessee Volunteer football, an active member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, and always full of constant laughter. He never met a stranger and was just as enthusiastic about the success of others as he was of his own. He loved the lord, his wife, his family, his friends, his ball players and his sports.\nHe was the son of the late William Franklin Hanks and Sarah Rand Hanks. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beth Brunson Ballentine Hanks. He is survived by his two sons, William Hanks, III and Wallace Hanks; his two daughters, Linda Hanks Kapstein and Lucille Hanks Payne (John). He is also survived by his twelve grandchildren; Zachary and Jacob Kapstein, Chelsea, Will, and Heath Hanks, Sidney, Sophia, Harrison, Josie, and Henley Hanks, and Ellie and John Wallace Payne. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Peggy Ballentine, and her four children; and his care giver Romona Goethie who became a part of his family.\nIn lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, TN.
