William Capers Andrews, Jr. On the evening of October 25, 2014, William Capers Andrews Jr. passed away peacefully of natural causes at The Summit Place, in Beaufort, SC. Capers was 95 years old. Capers was born at home in Atlanta, GA on March 3, 1919. He was the only child of William Capers Andrews, Sr. and Beatrice Smith Andrews. In 1933, Capers was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America and attended the World Scout Jamboree in Budapest, Hungary. On October 14, 1941 he was commissioned as an Officer in the US Army. In 1942, he graduated from The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, with a degree in Business Administration. During World War II, Capers served as a Company Commander and Battalion Staff Officer in Patton's 3rd Army in France and Germany. He was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious achievement and a Purple Heart. He served in the Army and Army Reserves until 1974, attaining the rank of Colonel. Following the war, Capers and Mary, his wife of 52 years, began their family. They lived in Atlanta and Augusta, GA as well as Birmingham, AL, before moving to Savannah, GA where he was the General Manager of the Savannah Agency of Mutual of New York. After retirement, Capers lived in Columbus, GA and Beaufort, SC. Capers is survived by his children, Marianne Mikell, Susan (Lee) Nall, and Nan (Harry) Hopkins; grandchildren Susan Brake, Drew Nall, Helen Miller, Katie Faison, 1LT William Nall, Kyle Hopkins, and Sarah Hopkins; great-grandchildren Liam Brake, Emma Faison, Allie Faison, and Callan Brake; sister-in-law Nancy Hair; and many, many nieces, nephews, and friends. Capers was preceded in death by his wife Mary McElmurray Andrews, wife Marie Stapleton Payette Peatross Andrews, and grandson CPT Brandon Mikell. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3pm at Summit Place Assisted Living, 1119 Pick Pocket Plantation Dr., in Beaufort, SC and officiated by Rev. Ashley Sanders. Burial services will be held Friday, Oct. 31, at 11am at Westover Memorial Park Cemetery in Augusta, GA, officiated by Dr. Joel Richardson. Honorary pall-bearers will be Capers' sons-in-law, Robert Lee Nall, Jr. and Harry Keith Hopkins; grandsons Andrew Lee Nall and William Robert Nall; and grandsons-in-law John Richard Faison and Christopher Robert Brake.
