Col. Terrance L. Smith, USMC, Retired, 70, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012 in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Col Smith was born on August 4, 1941 in San Diego, CA. He is the son of the late Ted Smith and Emma Wandel Smith. He graduated from Shepherd College in 1964 with a degree in history and physical education. From 1964 to 1967 he taught history and social studies as well as coaching basketball and baseball at Ryken High School, his alma mater, in Leonardtown Maryland. He joined the Marine Corps in 1967 where he served a tour in Viet Nam earning a Bronze Star with Combat V. In 1981 he earned a Masters degree from Webster College. He served at many duty stations in the United States and overseas in his almost 30 year military career to include a tour at the White House in Washington, DC. After his retirement from the Marine Corps he was Chief of Staff for the Superintendent of Schools for San Diego City Schools. In 2003 he and his wife moved to Tucson, Arizona and in 2005 they moved to Beaufort, SC to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He was active in Post 70 AMVETS, enjoyed travel, reading and sports. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Stephanie Storm Smith of Beaufort, SC; one son, Todd Smith of VA and one daughter, Shannon Regil of FL; one sister, Pam Cunningham of IL; three grandchildren.
