Sherrie Plejdrup, 77, of Callawassie Island, SC on September 24 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, after a long, brave struggle with illness. The Celebration of Life is noon Sunday, October 2 at Callawassie Country Club. She was born Sharon Chapman July 19, 1939 in Huntington Park, California near LA's Southgate High School. After graduation, she was a telephone operator when a blind date at a 50's drive-in (with roller-skating waitresses, American Graffiti style) led to the love of her life: Al Plejdrup, a Korean War Army veteran. The family Sherrie made with Al was her single-minded focus. Her son, Rob, and daughter, Dori, will miss her limitless devotion: PTA Mom of every holiday, leadfoot driver of her 1969 Pontiac GTO muscle car to every lesson and event, tomato soup on sick days, uncounted hours managing Dori to a national skating championship. In between there were crafts mastered too numerous to mention, artistry mastered, then new challenges in her relentless thirst for learning: Calligraphy, quilting, label printing; porcelain painting studied in Germany and Switzerland; skating costumes designed and sewn; cake decorating for birthdays with castles, tigers, teddy bears. Her passion for family soon flowed to her grandchildren, Conor Allyn, Jake Allyn and Baylee Koth, and her new great-grandson Aidan Allyn. Their smiling photos were her greatest treasures; their accomplishments her greatest pride and joy. She was Volunteer of the Year for MS in Texas, where she finished raising her children before retiring with Al to her favorite view on earth: The low country marshes out their window on Callawassie Island. Never was a woman more loved, cared for and missed by her husband of 58 years, whose final kiss released her gently into this good night. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to Hospice Care of the Low Country.
