Robert A. Spetz, 97, widower of Marjorie Sharpe Spetz, of Beaufort, SC passed away on Friday, December 16, 2016 at Morningside of Beaufort. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at 11 AM at Morningside of Beaufort with burial in Beaufort National Cemetery. Bob was born on August 13, 1919 in Kane, PA to the late Carl Spetz and Alma Anderson Spetz, and grew up in Erie, PA. He graduated from Penn State and was a life long Nittany Lion fan. He then worked as a Chemical Engineer at Firestone, but left to join the WW2 war effort as a Naval Officer aboard a minesweeper. While on duty in Miami, he met and married Margie, the love of his life. After the war they returned to Pennsylvania where he worked for American Viscose (later FMC Corp) and Talon in Meadville. It was a great town to raise their family and to develop many close friendships. They enjoyed getting together with friends for dinner parties, cards, charades and especially golfing. But the cold eventually sent them South, first to Myrtle Beach, where Bob finished his career, and finally to Beaufort. He loved sports and played golf well into his 90s, where it got easier to shoot his age. And he loved his family, friends and church, the most important things in his life. In his words, "I consider myself as part of maybe not the greatest generation but certainly one of the luckiest. As the lady from Argentina said, don't cry for me. I have been to many places, had lots of great friends, and had much love from the family I came from and the family I had." Surviving are two daughters, Leslie Olson (Thomas) of Beaufort, SC and Sally Spetz (Doug Katz) of Raleigh, NC; two grandchildren, Erik L. Olson (Andrea) and Amy O. Johnson (Jeff); and four great grandchildren (Ian and Lauren Olson, Maggie and Eliza Johnson). In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or a favorite charity.
