Robert Franklin McTier, age 79, resident of Dataw Island, SC, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 11, 2015, after a short illness at his home surrounded by his wife and family. Robert was born September 10, 1935, in Woodland, GA to Rev. William E. McTier, Sr. and Sue Alsobrook McTier. Robert grew up in South Georgia where he graduated from Waycross High School in 1953. Robert received his BS in mechanical engineering and MS degree from Georgia Tech. Upon completion of his education he began a long and rewarding career with Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN. During his 36 year career with Eastman, he had 15 different positions at the company with increasing responsibilities, retiring in 1996 as a Vice President & General Manager of the Fibers Business Organization. While in Kingsport, he was a member of Society of Plastics Engineers; Association for Textile Technology; Chemical Manufacturer's Association, International Trade Committee; Industry Sector Advisory Committee to U.S. Chamber of Commerce on International Trade; Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, United Way, Boy Scouts of America; and First Broad Street United Methodist Church where he was an active participant in many areas of church life. He had a 30 year involvement with Boy Scouts of America serving as Cubmaster, District Chairman, Council Vice President and Sequoyah Council President, 1993-1995. As Council President, Robert guided a $2.2 million capital campaign targeting improvements of camp facilities, creation of an endowment fund, and building a new, multi-purpose Scout Service Center. After retirement to Dataw Island, SC in 1996, Robert, an avid mariner, and his wife, Dianne, spent six months each year of the first 10 years of retirement on their boat, "Rambler", with extensive travel along the U.S. coast and the Central Exumas, Bahamas. He was a tireless fisherman and enjoyed being on the water and outdoors as much as possible. He is survived by his wife, Dianne Roller McTier, four children: Robert F. McTier, Jr. (Bert) and wife Jane (Hanks); Bill McTier and wife Sara (Clendenon); Betsy Holland and husband John; and Lynda Hammes and husband Paul. He is also survived by grandchildren Caroline and Andrei' McTier; Megan Methvin and husband Chris; Morgan McTier; Kirsten and Katelyn Holland; Brandon and Emily Hammes; and great-grandchild, Charlotte Methvin; one brother, William E. McTier, Jr. and wife Marian; one sister, Susie A. McTier and husband Jack along with several nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to share in a celebration of Robert's life on Friday, July 17 at 11 AM at the Baptist Church of Beaufort, Beaufort SC. Visitation with the family will be held at Anderson Funeral Home, Beaufort, SC on Thursday, July 16 from 5 PM to 7 PM. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waycross, GA on Saturday at 10:30 AM.
