Raymond Lewis James, Jr. Obituary (1929 - 2021)

Raymond Lewis James, Jr., 91, of Beaufort, SC passed away on Friday, February 19, 2021 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Visitation for Raymond will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM with services following the visitation at Carteret Street United Methodist Church. Due to COVID-19 restrictions Graveside Services at the Beaufort National Cemetery may be limited to a certain number of people. Raymond was born on September 8, 1929 in Girard, OH, the son of the late Raymond, Sr. and Beaulah (Synder) James. He later married Charlotte Brockwell on September 22, 1956 in Elizabeth City, NC. Raymond served his Country honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1948 until his retirement in 1969. In the USMC infantry, he served several combat tours in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars and as a Drill Instructor he trained young Marine recruits to support and defend our country. As a civil service employee, he was an Engineering Technician, ROICC, overseeing multi-million-dollar projects at Parris Island, Laurel Bay, Beaufort MCAS and the USN Hospital. He was preceded in death by both of his parents (1931 & 1936) and his sister, Shirley Bloom (1994). Survivors include: his wife: Charlotte (Brockwell) James; son: Chuck James (Janet); daughters: Cheryl Gollihugh (Tommy) and Karen Wilson (Gray); 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made out to Carteret Street United Methodist Church.
