Ramona Joan Bober, lovingly known as Joan, passed away peacefully at home in Beaufort, South Carolina, on August 5, 2026, at the age of 95.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the St. Peter's Historic Church beginning at 10:30 AM.
Born on October 12, 1930 to Robert and Catherine Fitzgerald, in Staten Island NY, she had four siblings, Robert, Dorothy, Marion and Jim, As a young child, her family moved to Bayonne, New Jersey, where she met the love of her life, Joseph Thaddeus Bober. They were married on June 15, 1957, beginning a marriage built on love, faith, and devotion to family.
Together they made their home in Clark, New Jersey, where they raised their three daughters: Ramona Fantini, Maryanne Buccarelli, and Barbara Mastrianni (Jim). Joan embraced her role as a stay-at-home mother with boundless love and dedication. Her family was always her greatest joy, and she devoted her life to caring for her husband, children, grandchildren, and, later, her great-grandchildren.
Joan and Joe shared a lifelong love of the Jersey Shore. Their home in Beach Haven West became the heart of countless family gatherings, summer vacations, holidays, and treasured memories on the bay. It was their happy place—a home filled with laughter, boating, family dinners, and generations of loved ones together. They moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and later to Beaufort.
She is survived by her daughters, Ramona Fantini and John Jacobs, Maryanne Buccarelli, and Barbara Mastrianni and her husband, Jim. Joan was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Chris. She also leaves behind three beloved grandchildren: Joseph Gregory Marquardt and his wife, Lauren; Kasey Christina Wernke and her husband, Matt; and Nicholas Buccarelli and his wife, Kayla. Joan’s greatest pride was watching her family continue to grow through her four cherished great-grandchildren: Logan Brooke Marquardt, Olivia Rose Marquardt, Chase Matthew Wernke, and Kaia Christina Wernke.
A devout Roman Catholic throughout her life, Joan’s faith was a quiet but constant source of strength and guidance. She will also be remembered for her impeccable sense of style. She loved shopping for beautiful clothes and was rarely seen without looking polished and fashionable.
Above all else, Joan will be remembered for her gentle spirit. Family and friends consistently described her with one simple word: sweet. She was kind, patient, generous with her love, and happiest when surrounded by those she loved most.
The legacy Joan leaves behind is not measured by accomplishments or possessions, but by the family she nurtured, the traditions she created, and the unconditional love she gave so freely.
Though her chair may now sit empty, we find comfort knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, Joe. The memories they created around the table, on the bay, and within their family will remain for generations. Together they built a family rooted in love, faith, and unwavering devotion to one another, and that legacy will endure forever.
