Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
Philip Robert "Bob" Schriger, age 90, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on May 13, 2026.
Graveside services were held on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life reception followed at the TidePointe Clubhouse Ballroom, Hilton Head Island, SC.
Born on November 13, 1935, in New York City, Bob was the son of the late Frank and Kate Schriger.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Judy Schriger; his children, Alan (Tamar) Schriger, Suzanne (George) Chamberlain, and Todd Schriger; his grandchildren, Mordechai (Tehila), Danielle (Justin), Efrat (Shabtai), Timothy (Cherrie), Yona (Ido), Levona (Haim), Thomas, Binyamin, and Ephraim; and his great-grandchildren, Li-el, Yosef, Tayla, Lia, Alma, Kate, and Gaya.
Bob graduated from James Monroe High School and the Fordham University School of Pharmacy in the Bronx, New York. During his third year of pharmacy school, he married Judith, Judy, Lois Maltz, also of the Bronx. The young couple lived in the same apartment building as Bob's parents. Their first child, Alan, was born the following year, and their second child, Suzanne, arrived a year later.
After graduating from Fordham, Bob worked at a local pharmacy. In 1961, the family moved to Fresh Meadows, Queens, where he joined his cousin's pharmacy. The following year, their third and final child, Todd, completed the family. In 1964, Bob began searching for a pharmacy of his own. Together with a classmate from Fordham, he purchased a pharmacy in New Rochelle, New York, and moved his family nearby. Several years later, he and his partner acquired a second pharmacy in Mamaroneck.
Bob developed a passion for ballroom dancing and took lessons at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio. He became so accomplished that he eventually taught as an instructor. Judy kept pace as his dance partner, and together they impressed audiences wherever they danced.
When it came time to retire, Bob and Judy considered either Florida or Hilton Head Island. They ultimately chose South Carolina and never looked back. They first lived in a house before downsizing to a waterfront apartment. Their children and grandchildren frequently visited, sharing in the family's love of the island. In 2016, they moved to the TidePointe community, where Bob became well known for his storytelling, humor, and ability to keep friends entertained and laughing.
Bob was also an avid tennis player. Family and friends often joked that he had beaten everyone on the island, leaving no one left to challenge him.
A gifted musician, Bob played the clarinet for more than 80 years. He performed in his high school and college bands and later played with the Hudson Valley Wind Symphony in White Plains while living in Westchester County. After moving to South Carolina, he joined several local orchestras. He especially enjoyed playing with a university orchestra and loved the novelty of performing alongside musicians decades younger than himself.
At TidePointe, Bob served as the master of ceremonies for Bingo. Before each game, he would entertain the audience by playing a few songs on his clarinet. Later in life, he often performed with his good friend Jo for residents in the assisted living community. All who heard him agreed that Bob was a gifted musician whose music brought joy to others.
Bob and Judy also traveled to Israel several times to visit their son and his family. In February 1988, Bob had the remarkable distinction of becoming the 18 millionth passenger to fly El Al Airlines. As a result, the entire trip was paid for, and they received extraordinary treatment throughout their visit. The Mayor of Jerusalem personally guided them on a tour, they met with the Prime Minister, and they stayed in one of Jerusalem's finest hotels.
Bob will be remembered for his warmth, humor, captivating stories, athletic enthusiasm, musical gifts, affection for cats, and his legendary love of ketchup. Above all, he was deeply devoted to his family. He brought joy to everyone who knew him and leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hilton Head Humane Association, 10 Humane Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.
