Phil was born in Tuscan Arizona but spent most of his life in Walden, Colorado. His parents owned a small hotel, and his grandparents owned a large working ranch. Phil worked in the hotel business with his parents but spent most of his summers working on the ranch. Phil loved growing up in the Rocky Mountains and enjoyed hiking, camping, fishing, snow skiing and any activity
that took him outdoors.
He attended 4 years of high school at New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) and greatly
enjoyed his time there. He attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO for a brief period on a football scholarship. He then left college to join the Navy in 1954. He hoped to make a career of the Navy but was unable to do that because of an injury that put him into Portsmouth Naval Hospital for approximately 1 year.
Phil was married in 1958 to his first wife and returned to Colorado State to continue with his college. Then, prior to his completion of college, they moved to WVA to be closer to his wife’s family. He continued his college both in Charleston WVA and in Huntington WVA.
