Michael Rex Wingard, 78, of Beaufort, South Carolina, died at his home on March 20, 2023.\n\nMike was born in Akron, Ohio on June 9, 1944. He graduated from DePauw University (Bachelor of Arts) in 1966 and married Helen Francis Miller on June 11 of that same year. \n\nMike attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the United States Army. He attained the rank of captain and served in both Korea and Germany.\n\nAfter his military service, Michael obtained a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Northwest Missouri State University and worked for Quaker Oats, Sarah Lee, National Cash Register, and Sherwin Williams. Mike and Helen lived in Glendale, AZ; Saint Joseph, MO; Springboro, OH; Lake Zurich, IL; Burr Ridge, IL; Nashville, TN; and Dallas, TX.\n\nHe was an avid scuba diver and enjoyed both wildlife and underwater photography. He and Helen traveled the world in pursuit of new diving adventures and shared amazing experiences on safaris in Africa. \n\nMichael was predeceased by his parents Milton Rex and Marilyn Hope Wingard (née Wyckoff). He is survived by his wife, Helen (Miller) Wingard; daughter, Heidi Leah (Wingard) Newman (Steve); sister, Marcia Jean (Wingard) Aten (Avery); brother, John Raymond Wingard (Kathleen); brother, James Lewis Wingard (Karen); and his nieces and nephews including Emily, Hilary, Heather, Jennifer, Daniel, Amanda and Alex.\n\nA graveside service will be held at the United States Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, SC on June 9th, 2023 at 2 pm.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mike can be made to The Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee, https://www.elephants.com/.
