MGYSGT Lon Allen Hoover, USMC, Retired, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022, at Caroline's Cottage in Ridgeland, SC. Visitation for Mr. Hoover will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Anderson Funeral Home from 5-7 PM. Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, December 8, 2022, in the Carl Anderson Memorial Chapel at 10 AM with Graveside Services following at the Beaufort National Cemetery with Full Military Honors at 11 AM. Lon was born on August 28, 1949, in Pittston, PA, the son of the late Kenneth E. and Betty (Richens) Hoover. He later married Sandra Cahill on August 22, 1970 in West Pittston, PA. Lon served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years until his retirement in 1999 as an E-9. After his service, he started his own Landscaping Company, Yard Appeal. During Lon's time in the Marine Corps he completed the Avionics Maintenance Administration course, served on the Nuclear Emergency Team Exercises; completed the Advanced First Term Avionics class; and the SNCO Academy. He received the following medals and ribbons: the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal (9 times), Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 times), South West Asia Service Medal, Pistol Marksman Badge, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (3 times), Certificate of Commendation, and Meritorious Mast. Lon was an Eagle Scout and Scout Master of Troop 211 in Laurel Bay, SC. He was involved with his sons' sporting activities by coaching youth t-ball, baseball, and soccer. Lon was active in skeet shooting, participating in the World Skeet Shoot in 1981, along with being an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting wild turkeys, ducks, and doves. Lon and his wife, Sandra, enjoyed traveling and made frequent visits to Disney World, Disney Land, cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. Survivors include: his wife: Sandra Hoover; sons: Brian (Amanda) from Simpsonville, SC, Wesley, from Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Mark, Taylor, and Adalyn from Simpsonville, SC; brother: Kim (Marian) from Royersford, PA; sister: Jan, from Tampa, FL; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Caroline's Cottage (www.fochospice.org) or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (T2T.org).
