On March 3, 2013, Melville H. Valkenburg, 79, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, with family at his side, peacefully passed away at his home. Beloved husband of Diane Curtis; loving father of Christine Kanuch, John Valkenburg, Lori Valkenburg, Alan Curtis English, Kimberlee Baughman and Doreen Evers; dear brother of Ethel Henderson; adored grandfather of Tom and Sarah Kanuch, Sabrina Searfoss, George Lynch, Philip and Parker Evers, Hunter and Wyatt English; dear friends of Vince and Linda Crivella (Potomac, MD). Melville H. Valkenburg, son of Melville Odell Valkenburg and Violet Harrington Turnbull was born September 26, 1933 in Clifton, New Jersey. He moved to Northern Virginia where he lived the majority of his life. After graduation from Cleveland Marshall Law School in 1964, Mr. Valkenburg accepted a position as a Management Intern with the US General Services Administration. After a year, he began his legal career with the Office of General Counsel of GSA. Through his career, he rose to more prominent positions within GSA's Office of General Counsel. After working in GSA's largest Regional Counsels Office for seven years, Mr. Valkenburg was promoted to GSA's National Office in 1987, first as the Deputy Associate General Counsel and on July 15, 1990, Mr. Valkenburg was appointed as the Associate General Counsel of GSA's Real Property Division. As such, he was responsible for providing all legal services to GSA's Public Buildings Service which is responsible for acquiring more than 370 million feet of space for 1.1 million federal employees. Mr. Valkenburg a mentor to many young attorneys. In addition to his duties with GSA, he was also a noted teacher of Federal Real Property Lease Law with Management Concepts, Inc. Mr. Valkenburg retired from GSA on September 3, 1993 and moved to Dataw Island. Funeral Services will be private.
