Maurice Stevens

–

Beaufort, South Carolina

Maurice Robert “Bob” Stevens, Jr. was born in Flintville, Tennessee on September 11, 1939. Bob was preceded in death by his mother Virginia Wohlford Stevens and father Maurice Robert Stevens, Sr., as well as his twin brother, James “Jim” Douglas Stevens. He spent his early childhood in Erwin, Tennessee, before moving to Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he met the love his life Elsie Lillian Whetsell Stevens.

Bob graduated from Orangeburg High School in 1957, where he was an enthusiastic athlete, playing baseball and basketball. He worked for a year before attending Presbyterian College, where he majored in history. He joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps, of which he was the battalion commander, and graduated with military honors. Upon graduation in 1962, he married his childhood sweetheart Elsie.

Bob then commissioned into the United States Army, where he served the country as a field artillery officer. Bob and Elsie deployed to Germany, where he made some of his fondest memories. Upon discharge from the service, Bob began a career in banking, in which he worked for over 40 years. Bob and Elsie’s only child, Mary Heyward Harper, was born in 1967.

Bob was well respected in banking and took great pride in improving his field, at one point serving as the chairman of the South Carolina Banking School. He was an enthusiastic participant in his community, serving on the boards of civic organizations and churches important to him. His career in banking eventually led him and Elsie to Beaufort, South Carolina, where they settled down.

Bob was beloved by his whole family, affectionately known as “GeeDaddy.” He was loving and supportive of all his family’s interests, passions, and hobbies. Whether it was going to every single swim meet, basketball, and rugby game, or learning about waterfowl hunting through his grandsons’ pictures and videos, he showed genuine interest in everything his family did. He left a permanent impression on his grandchildren, who treasure all the time he selflessly devoted to them. Bob loved his family second only to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His loss will leave an irreplaceable gap in his family’s life.

Bob was exceptionally excited to have recently met his great-granddaughter Ella Lousie Harper, born October 12, 2023. Bob was a man of great faith, and proudly served as a deacon at his and Elsie’s church, Community Bible Church.

Bob is survived by his wife of 61 years Elsie, his daughter Mary Heyward Harper, his son-in-law Frampton Lawton Harper, II, his grandchildren Lawton and Luke Harper, Lawton’s wife Kathryn, and his great-grandchild Ella Lousie Harper. He will be greatly missed.

Memorials may be made to Community Bible Church and Holy Trinity Classical Christian School.
