Mary H. Oenbrink, 94, of Beaufort, SC, peacefully passed away with family by her side at the Friends of Caroline Hospice facility in Ridgeland, SC on Tuesday, February 7, 2023.\n\nBorn and raised in St. Louis, MO, Mary was the daughter of John and Mae Prost. She graduated from Fontbonne College in St. Louis, MO with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1950. While attending college she met and was courted by Philip Oenbrink while he was attending dental school at St. Louis University. She married Dr. Philip G. Oenbrink in 1952 and enjoyed military living for thirty years. Her love of travel was well suited for life as a Navy wife taking her to Naples, Italy, many southeastern states and finally, Beaufort, SC in 1974. Mary and Phil loved the low country and Beaufort became their permanent retirement home. They especially loved dancing with the Beaufort Square-dancers and were the first ones on the dance floor! Mary had a love of music and enjoyed singing with The Sea Island chapter of The Sweet Adelines. She was an avid bridge player and her weekly bridge group developed into lasting friendships.\n\nMary was a life-long learner, educator, and family genealogist. She was passionate about fighting for the rights of the unborn and wrote numerous letters to the editor, defending their right to life. While raising seven children, she earned her Master of Education in 1976 from the University of South Carolina. She used her degree as a private tutor of children with learning disabilities, teaching reading, and working in the reading program for recruits on Parris Island. She was an accomplished artist in multiple mediums and especially gifted in calligraphy. In her final years, she sent hundreds of hand-made cards to friends, family but especially to her fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.\n\nMary was a devout Catholic, loving wife, and devoted mother. She spent countless hours in service to her local church and particularly loved volunteering in the Franciscan Center Thrift Shop on St. Helena Island for many years. \n\nMrs. Oenbrink is survived by seven children: Christine Marchant (Richard) of Winter Haven, FL; Stephen Oenbrink of Beaufort, SC; Rev. Michael Oenbrink of Hilton Head IsIand, SC; Ann Sealy (David) of Greenwood, SC; Thomas Oenbrink (Chyrl) of Mount Pleasant, SC; Beth Bosserman (Mark) of Columbus, IN; and Melanie Ferretti (Frank) of Columbia, SC. She was preceded in death by her husband, her six siblings, and a grandson, Grant Bosserman.\n\nFather Michael Oenbrink will be the celebrant at the Funeral Mass on Monday, February 13, 2023, at 12:00 pm, at St. Peter's Catholic Church on Lady’s Island, SC. All guests are invited to join the family for a lunch reception held at the church hall immediately following. A private interment will take place at Beaufort National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 14, 2023.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church.\n\nAnderson Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family.
