Jones Butler (Tosh) Temple, III Obituary (1941

Jones Butler (Tosh or Buster to family) Temple, III, of Okatie, South Carolina, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, July 21, 2022, after a hard fought 15-year battle with prostate cancer. He was strong, brave, and kept his sense of humor until the end. He was born on June 2, 1941, in Abbeville, SC to Jones B. Temple, Jr and Hazel McMahan Temple. Mr. Temple was a 1959 graduate of Abbeville High School after which he entered the Marine Corps. During his service he attended Aerographers Mate A and B schools and Radiosonde Set Operations school. He also attended the MCI Course for Marine Corps Club and Mess Restaurant operations. His first years as a Marine were in Weather Service and his last years were in Club Management around the world. In-between he worked Special Operations, NATO Service, learned to fly planes and helicopters (Huey) and did and saw things in Vietnam that he could never fully talk about. When he left Vietnam for the final time he was told "not to stand out as a service member" so he would not get spit on while traveling home. He served in Vietnam for a year in '65/'66 and a year in '69/'70. (And unofficial time in Laos.) He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp July of 1973 as a Master Sergeant after 20+ years of active duty followed by 10 years in the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve. At discharge, his primary duties were Club Manager/Treasurer, and Weather Forecaster secondarily. He was honored to have been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Cross of Gallantry, Good Conduct Medal with 5 stars, Vietnam Service Medal with 7 stars, Meritorious Unit Citation, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge, etc. Mr. Temple is survived by his wife Gail Temple of Okatie, SC; sons, Lonnie Temple of Abbeville, SC and Jonathan Temple of Beaufort, SC; grandchildren, Brandon and Hailey of Guyton, Georgia, Milla of Riverdale, Georgia, Lonnie II of Greenwood, SC, and Joseph of Beaufort, SC; siblings, Roland Temple (wife Nelva) of Bradley, SC and sister Connie Normand of Abbeville, SC; sisters-in-law; Cindy (Chris) Lichtenwalter of Conway, Arkansas and Betty Jo Marshall of Beaufort, SC; nieces/nephews, John Noblin, Neile Ross, LeeAnne May and Nicole Noblin, all of South Carolina, and Hannah Lichtenwalter of Arkansas, Conner Lichtenwalter of Florida, Callan Lichtenwalter of Washington state, Matt Marshall of Tennessee, and Jay Marshall of SC. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Frances Noblin, brother-in-law Sonny Noblin, and nephew Joseph Charles Marshall. Above all else Jones Butler (Tosh) Temple was a man that brought strength to the family he left behind. He gave unmatched love to his wife and showed his sons and grandchildren that even when you are facing a losing battle, never back down. The important thing is to give all you have and never give up. He is a man that will always be loved and never forgotten because he will live forever in the lives of the people who remember him. A celebration of life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at the Midway Baptist Church, 1218 Hwy 284, Abbeville, SC 29620. Visitation will be held in the church starting 1 hour prior to the service. Following the service, family will receive friends in the church sanctuary. Scattering of the ashes will be private.
