John D Holloway, Sr. Obituary (2018) - Beaufort, South Carolina

GY/SGT John D. Holloway, Sr., 77, USMC, Retired, of Beaufort, SC and husband of Linda W. Holloway died Thursday, October 4, 2018 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 10:00am at Port Royal United Methodist Church, with the service to follow at 11:30am at church with interment in Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. The above services have been cancelled due to Tropical Storm Michael and will be rescheduled for Wednesday, October 17th, 2018 visitation will be at 10:00am at Port Royal United Methodist Church, with the service to follow at 11:30am at church with interment in Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. Mr. Holloway was born in Anniston, AL on October 29, 1940. He is the son of the late Moreland J. Holloway and Virginia Hollingsworth Holloway. John served his country for 20 years in the Marine Corps with two tours in Vietnam. During his career he was awarded various medals, including the Bronze Star with Combat V, the Purple Heart, and the Navy Commendation Medal. After his military career he was self-employed but always returned to his passion "the river". At a young age John loved hunting and fishing. Instilled with this passion from his father, he passed this passion and the love of the outdoors to his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He was always willing to teach anyone as long as they would listen. Throughout his life he read and learned on his own and passed this knowledge to his children, grandchildren and great grandchild. He loved life, his family and feared nothing except God and for the safety of his family. He loved to get out and about, especially with Linda, his bride of almost 59 years. He always had a story from his travels, fishing or everyday experiences and knew how to tell it. He had a large personality and made friends wherever he went. He will be loved, remembered and missed by all who knew him. John was a member of Port Royal Methodist Church, Port Royal Masonic Lodge No. 242, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, DAV, and 3rd Recon Association. Many thanks to the Beaufort Memorial Staff and Tidewater Hospice for their caring and kindness to John and family during his illness. Surviving in addition to his wife, Linda; are two sons, John Holloway, Jr., and Patrick Holloway (Vicky); one daughter, Ann Mayberry; one brother, Donald Holloway (Carolyn), and one sister, Sylvia Herndon; four grandchildren, Andrew Lidster (Maressa), Elise Mayberry, Victoria Holloway and Phillip Holloway; one great grandchild, Tyler John Lidster; a niece, several nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in memory of John to Port Royal United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 218, Port Royal, SC 29935 and Greenville Shriner's Hospital, 950 West Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605.
