John G. Copley Jr, 85, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, passed away, Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at his home. John was born July 5, 1931 in York Pennsylvania. After graduating from Manlius Academy and Princeton University, he served as a guided missile instructor in the Army Artillery for three years, retiring as a Captain. John was employed as a Purchasing Manager for Corning Glass Works in Corning NY. During his employment he traveled the world procuring raw materials for Steuben Glass. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed many summers on the Finger Lakes in New York State. He and his wife Jan retired to Dataw Island in 1995 where he enjoyed many activities, especially golf. John is survived by his wife Jeanette, of 64 years, and daughters Barbara Hamilton (Larry) and Kati Merriman (Ron), both in Michigan; five grandchildren Katie McCone (Brett), Russell Hamilton (Jennifer), Lauren Mahoney (Derek), Sean Merriman (Nina) and Shannon Merriman (Alex Cummings) and seven great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday January 14 at First Presbyterian Church in Beaufort South Carolina. Reverend Becky Albright will be officiating. A reception is planned following the service 4-6PM at Dataw Island Club. Memorials may be made to the Low Country Habitat for Humanity or Good Neighbor Medical Clinic in Beaufort. Anderson Funeral home and Crematory is serving the family.
