Ray Joan Breland Harriott, 87, passed away Thursday, December 23, 2021, at the John E. Harter Nursing Center in Fairfax, SC, where she received excellent care. \nShe was the wife of John Heape Harriott.\nJoan was born on May 27, 1934, in Lobeco, SC. She was the oldest daughter of Melvin B. Breland and Edna Inez Bowers Breland. \nJoan grew up in the heart of Beaufort, living on Greene Street most of her young life. She attended kindergarten at the Old Arsenal on Craven Street. After moving out to Gardens Corner, SC, she attended Lobeco Elementary School and later, Beaufort County schools. \nBy her own admission Joan was a restless, rambling child. Hence the reason her sisters gave her the nickname "Rambling Rose". She rambled all over the peaceful and safe streets of Beaufort, going to the movies at the Palm Theater, stopping in to buy candy or a penny cigarette from Mr. Pruitt's store, or strolling down to Battery Creek for a swim, before heading back to Bay Street to watch the happenings out on the Beaufort River. \nShe loved spending time at her beloved Hunting Island with her family.\nJoan was an accomplished seamstress working in the tailor shop on Parris Island, One-Hour Martinizing, and was the owner of Joan Alterations. \nShe served her community as a member of the Jayceettes, serving as President 1965/66. She was active in the Beaufort Water Festival and the Sea Island Beauty Pageants, and helped her husband, who was the Beaufort Fire Chief, plan the annual Fireman's Ball. She was a member of the Eastern Stars and the Sheldon Baptist Church.\nShe was preceded in death by her husband John; her parents; her brothers Tommy Breland (who died at birth), Roy Legree Breland, and William Terrell Breland; and her adopted sister Juanita "Nita" Brunson Respess; with her youngest son David Heape Harriott preceding her in death by only eight months. \nJoan is survived by four children: Judy Harriott Blankenship (Wayne) of Sheldon SC, John Rodney Harriott (Teresa) of Estill, SC, Jo Anne Harriott Peifer (Glenn), of Lobeco, SC, Richard Melvin Harriott (Darcie) of Yemassee, SC; and one sister, Jacquelyn Breland Solze of Beaufort, SC. \nShe has 13 grandchildren: Jeff, Jamie, Bradley, Suzanne, Robin, Annie, Jessie Ann, Joshua, Bridget, Angela, Jason, Jeremy, and Wesley. She has 30 great-grands and 1 great-great-grand. \nServices will be held January 4, 2022, at Anderson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 1:00 PM, with the service immediately following at 2:00 PM.
