Jesse Edward Thames, 88, husband of Verna Roach Thames, of Beaufort, SC, died Sunday, November 17, 2013 in Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 10:00am at Grays Hill Baptist Church with the Funeral to begin at 11:00am in the church, interment in Thames Cemetery, Varnville, SC. Mr. Thames was born in Varnville, SC on May 3, 1925. He is the son of the late Jesse James Thames and Annie Eliza Mixson Thames. He graduated from Varnville High School in 1942. He served in the U S Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Mr. Thames was employed by ESSO Standard Oil Company in 1953-1964, then was transferred to Beaufort in 1959. He was owner of Thames Propane Gas & Air Conditioning Company from 1964-1982. He was a life member of Masonic Lodge 98, Military Order of the Purple Heart Of The U. S. A. and a member of Grays Hill Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of 66 years, Verna, of Beaufort, SC; are one son, Eddie Thames(Carol) of Beaufort, SC; three daughters, Glenda Harwood(Matt) of Beaufort, SC; Joan Gilmour(Mike) of Denver, CO and Maldia Thames of Beaufort, SC; one sister, Barbara Ann Johnson; nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Josh Gilmour.
