Janis Ubelis Obituary (1949

Jani Ubelis, after a valiant fight with serious health issues, was gently lifted up into the Lord's arms with his loving wife Ann Marie at his side. He came to embrace his faith late in life when they joined the Parrish of St. Helena. With an uplifting persona, he made friends easily and gave generously. A friend said of him, "Jani was one of the Coolest Cats!". He was a talented jack-of-all trades, from car repair/detailing, amateur car racing, all around handy-man and English As A Second Language tutor. As a small business owner, his skills and attention to detail shined in the print shops he owned in Miami, FL, New York and ultimately in Beaufort, SC. With the rise of the digital age the printing business was sold and he became certified as a Residential Home Inspector until his retirement in 2011. Jani loved NASCAR, photography, picture framing, working on home improvements, good books, but above all else he loved his family and friends. Born in a displaced persons camp in the wake of WWII, in Augsburg, Germany, his Latvian family emigrated to New York City when he was 2 years old, finally settling in Brentwood NY. After graduating Brentwood High School he moved to Florida in 1970. Returning to New York in 1990, he met his soul mate, Ann Marie. They married in1993 and eventually opened Ink Spot Print Shop in Northport, NY. In 2001 they moved with their business to Beaufort, SC, settling on Lady's Island. Jani was pre-deceased by his parents Peteris and Melanija (Sakins) Ubelis, his sister Baiba Ubelis, and step-son Micheal Obourke. He is survived by his wife Ann Marie (King) Ubelis, sisters Aina Ubelis Ford, Ilze Ubelis and goddaughter Julian (Ubelis) Lodge, adult children Corrine Ubelis, Terry (Ubelis) Corbett and granddaughter Kayla, and step daughter Irma (Obourke) Sabel. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Anderson Funeral Home with services and burial at the Parish Church of St. Helena, Thursday, July 8, 2021, 11 am.
