MSGT Jackie "Jack" Bishop, USMC, Retired, was born on July 4th, 1936 and passed away on October 12th, 2023 at the age of 87.\n\nJack was born and raised in Southern Ohio to the late Charles and Edna Gaston Bishop. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January of 1955 and completed basic training at Parris Island Marine Corps base. Jack was proud to serve his country for 23 years, which included multiple deployments to Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and many European countries. His service awards, designations and accomplishments include Combat Aircrew Member, Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Navy Achievement Medal with Valor, Expert Rifle Marksman, Marine Rifle Expert Badge, and Marine Pistol Expert Badge. Many of these achievements were awarded numerous times. Following his retirement in 1978, he worked for the South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control for 17 years as a health inspector. \n\nJack's time in the Corps sparked his enthusiasm for guns. He was a connoisseur and a skilled sharpshooter. He was a collector of mint and rare coins. Jack enjoyed camping and fishing with his friends and family, and frequented the Combahee River. He also enjoyed metal detecting, hunting for civil war relics, and searching for shark teeth in the Lowcountry. Jack was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 8760, as well as the AMVETS Post #70.\n\nJack is survived by: his wife of 68 years, Shareene; his children David (Brenda) Bishop of Hickory, NC, Terrie (Grady) Howell of Bluffton, SC, and Donna (Kevin) Werle, of Jamestown, TN; his grandchildren Catina (Lamar) Toomer, Jessica Bishop, Crystal (Matthew) Ulmer, Charles Bishop, Brittany (Corey) Patnaude, Bryan (Steffany) Bishop, and Kaitlin (Jeremy) Ort; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He cherished his family and close friends dearly. \n\nJack was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Edna Bishop; his eldest son and daughter-in-law Steven and Kathy Bishop; his brothers and their respective spouses: Kenny (Bea) Bishop, Bill (Theresa) Bishop, and Glen (Wanda) Bishop; his sister Elizabeth Fenton; and his great-granddaughter Brianna Melton. \n\nThe family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from 1:00pm-3:00pm at Anderson Funeral Home.\n\nGraveside funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2023 at 1:00pm at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. \n\nTo honor Jack's memory, a celebration of life will be held on Thursday October 19, 2023 at 2:00pm at the VFW Post 8760. \n\nIn lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to any local area animal shelter, as Jack loved his four-legged friends dearly.
