Hugh Rahn Obituary (1940 - 2023) - Port Royal, South Carolina

Hugh (Ned) Edward Rahn, 83, husband of Faye Myers Rahn, of Beaufort, SC, died Sunday, December 24, 2023 at Trident Medical Center in North Charleston, SC. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Dolphin Banquet Room in the Sea Island Best Western Inn at 1015 Bay St, Beaufort, SC on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00pm but guests are welcome to visit with the family anytime between 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Please note that onsite parking is not available but there is public parking surrounding the Inn. If you are interested in joining the service virtually, please send a request to plantfolks@yahoo.com. Hugh Edward Rahn was born on August 7, 1940, in Port Royal, SC. He is the son of the late Hugh Ellis Rahn and Corrie Lee Rahn. He lived in Port Royal his entire life, except during his time in the military. Many of his favorite childhood memories involve being out on the water with his friends and camping on Bay Point Island. After graduating high school, his cousin, Lee, from Summerville, SC, introduced him to the future love of his life, Faye Myers, and they began dating. Ned joined the United States Air Force (USAF) and served four years of active duty from 1961 - 1965. During this time, Faye and Ned married and had their first daughter, Tracy. After his military service, Ned and Faye returned to Port Royal where his father, Hugh Ellis, helped them build their house next door to him and his mother. Their second daughter, Joni, was born soon after their home was completed. After military service, Ned started working at the Marine Corps Air Station Fire Department, working his way up to Chief before retiring in 1990. Ned was a talented horticulturalist and gardener, and he turned this passion into a second career. After his retirement, he went back to school and obtained a horticulture degree. He and his wife then started a small plant nursery which they operated for twenty years. Ned enjoyed growing all kinds of unusual plants and specialized in citrus and other fruit trees. In addition to horticulture, he enjoyed fishing, boating, photography, wine-making, and many other interests. He was always very interested in how things worked and could fix almost anything. He was caring, reliable and hard working. Most of all, he was a family man who loved spending time with his family, friends and pets. Surviving in addition to his wife, Faye, are two daughters, Tracy Pocta (John) and Joni Rahn, 3 grandchildren Angela (Chris), Jacob (Tina) and Nathan (Laura), and 7 great grandchildren.
