Haruko "Shorty" Yuhas Obituary (1934 - 2024)

Haruko "Shorty" Ishikawa Yuhas, 90, wife of Thomas A. Yuhas, of Port Royal, SC, passed away Friday, August 23, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her family. Mrs. Yuhas, affectionately known as "Shorty", was born on January 10, 1934, in Tokyo, Japan. She is the daughter of the late Shiroshi Ishikawa and Enayo Sato Ishikawa. Shorty was known for her adventurous spirit. In 1957, Shorty met the love of her life, and married Thomas (Tom) Yuhas, who was stationed in Japan with the U.S. Marine Corp. They recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Following multiple duty stations, Tom and Shorty settled in Beaufort, SC, in 1968. Shorty was loved by all who met her for her contagious energy and large heart. She raised her two sons, Steve and Kenny Yuhas, and enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies, including cooking authentic Japanese food, hosting guests, playing bingo and cards, dancing, crocheting, scrapbooking, and even shrimping as an official Lowcountry girl. Shorty spent many hours at her kitchen table offering wise counsel to those in need and quick-witted humor that kept her guests on their toes. As a confidante, Shorty's big heart and generosity reached many. In her later years, it gave Shorty great joy to have meals with her two sons, her two daughter-in-laws, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She enjoyed caring for others and was known famously for saying, "If you love it, you get it." Surviving in addition to her husband, Thomas, are two sons, Steven and wife Shelley Gay Yuhas of Fripp Island, SC, and Kenneth and wife Keota Yuhas of Mobile, AL; seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
