Laverne Martin

Laverne Martin, age 87 passed away at the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia, on March 17, 2024. Laverne was born on November 21, 1936 in Sylvania, Georgia, but spent her early years at Tybee Island, Georgia, until her marriage to James L Martin in 1957.

Laverne, also known as Bernie, is survived by her sons James L Martin Jr. and Fred J. Martin, as well as her granddaughter Elizabeth Anne. She was preceded in her death by her husband James L. Martin Sr, mother Gussie Blackburn, and father Lawrence (Bud) Blackburn.

After marriage to James, who was in the Air Force, they traveled throughout the country and spent several years overseas. They retired in Wilmington Island, Georgia, where she lived for 32 years. She then moved to Kingsland, Georgia, to be closer to family.

Laverne enjoyed genealogy and line dancing in her free time. She worshipped at Kingsland Baptist Church in Kingsland, Georgia, and in her early years at Chapel by the Sea in Tybee Island, Georgia.

Services will be held at Anderson Funeral Home in Beaufort, South Carolina. Memorial Services will take place on March 28, 2024. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, followed by the memorial service at 11:30 am. The burial will be at Beaufort National Cemetery at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Hospice of the Golden Isles Brunswick, Georgia. Contributions can be made directly through their website.
