Effie Oreata Salter Martin, 96, widow of Ralph Waldo Martin, Jr., of Beaufort, SC, died Thursday, July 2, 2020 at her residence.\nMrs. Martin was born in Laurens County, GA. She is the daughter of the late Ira Cecil Salter and Bessie Graham Salter.\nEffie grew up in Hinesville, GA, where she met her husband, Waldo. After she graduated from Bradwell Institute, they married and moved to Beaufort in 1941. She joined Carteret Street United Methodist church where she remained a member until her death. She taught the kindergarten Sunday school class for many years and always donated a generous amount of her lovely crocheted items to the annual church bazaar. Effie worked at Lipsitz' Department Store for 52 years and was always delighted when recognized and greeted by former customers. Widowed in 1964, it was her life's mission to ensure that her children and\nthe entire extended family always felt happy, safe, and loved. She absolutely completed this mission with her tremendous grace and strength.\nSurviving are two daughters, Elaine Roney and Susan Hollingsworth (Rusty); daughter-in-law, Sandy Martin; three grandsons, Dustin Roney (Jenny), Rob Martin, and John Hollingsworth (Megan); one great granddaughter, Madison; honorary granddaughter, Carol Holt-Cooper (Sean), several nieces and nephews.\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, Ralph Waldo Martin, III, and two sisters, Evelyn Hodges and Jewell Kurchinsky.\nDue to the Corona Virus, a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.\nIn lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Friends of Caroline\nHospice, 1110 13th Street, Port Royal, SC 29935.
