Donnie Ann Beer, 81, former Mayor Pro Tem and 23-year member of Beaufort City Council, died Friday, December 2, 2022, Mrs. Beer was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. She will be remembered for her outstanding civic leadership and her immeasurable impact she had on the lives of family members, friends, constituents and colleagues.\nMrs. Beer was born on October 1, 1941, to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Weldon Osborne. She graduated from Dreher High School in 1959. She wed Russell Lee Beer, the love of her life, on June 6, 1959. She raised 2 children and committed herself un-selflessly to the people of Beaufort. Her first job, though, was in Columbia, at Fort Jackson, plowing that new ground as the first civilian - and the first woman - to ever work in a military brigade.\nMrs. Beer was commitment to and loved Beaufort. She served 23 years on Beaufort City Council and several years as Mayor Pro-Tem. She has also been active with the Red Cross Disaster Assistance Team for fifteen years, and as a member, met the Fire Department at home fires and other emergencies to provide whatever is most needed.\nMrs. Beer organized the Annual 9-11 Ceremony at the Waterfront Park each year. Actively involved in bring the Lt. Dan Concert Independence Fund to Beaufort to help raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project. She helped found and Chaired the Chair of Healing Heroes of the Low Country. She had a special love for the National Cemetery volunteering there several times a week and putting special efforts into raising funds towards Wreaths Across America.\nMrs. Beer was known for her signature lapel pins that she wore everywhere she went and driving around Pigeon point and downtown Beaufort in her golf cart. She especially enjoyed dressing up and telling ghost stories for the annual Ghost Tours.\nMrs. Beer was an active and longtime member of Carteret Street United Methodist Church serving on many committees as well as being the church treasurer. She is survived by her husband; Russell Beer of Beaufort, SC, her children: Patricia (Trish) Johnson of Rock Hill, SC, Douglas Beer of Port Royal, SC. Three Grandchildren; Brandon Johnson of Rock Hill, SC, Katherine Johnson of Charlotte, NC, Paul Douglass Beer and his wife, Michelle, and their children Mickey Paul Beer, Paul Douglas Beer Jr. and Cole Franklin Beer of Crestview, FL. Her Sister; Katherine Jo Bleasdale and husband Martin of Columbia, SC.\nThe family would like to thank the staff of The Oaks Assisted Living and Memory Care and Agape Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.\nIn lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Carteret Street United Methodist Church, 408 Carteret St, Beaufort, SC 29902, The Lowcountry South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross, 21 Brendan Lane, Bluffton, SC 29910.\nA private, Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at The Beaufort National Cemetery.
