Donald Aldrich

–

Fripp Island, South Carolina

“From this lovely rainbow, we’re riding free
Love makes us whatever we want to be”
- Styne & Cahn (by way of Sinatra)

Donald Winthrop Aldrich, 94, of Fripp Island, South Carolina, sung his swinging swan song on February 24th, 2025. He was the eldest and “Depression” baby born to Nathan Winthrop Aldrich & Dorothy Marchacos Aldrich in Lowell, Massachusetts, on August 25th, 1930. Growing up in Tewksbury (and throughout his life), Don was definitely “game” for anything: Baseball hero, Basketball captain, Football quarterback, Thespian, Glee Club crooner, Yearbook editor & Student Council rep. Forever a hard worker, he capped off his high school achievements as Salutatorian and took home the Balfour Medal Award for Loyalty, Scholarship & Honor.

Keeping the same busy Student Council & Sporting slate at The University of Massachusetts/LowellTech, he graduated in 1952 with a BS in Textiles.
The day after graduation, Don clocked in at the local Walsh Mill (Ames Textile Corp).

Two years later, he marched in a different direction, eventually fighting & losing the Battle of Boot Camp Appendicitis with the Marine Corps and, honorably discharged, returned to the services in an Army uniform from 1954-56. Meanwhile, back on the home front, dutiful Don had conditionally surrendered to the considerable charms of Lowell’s Hildy Palmer whom he met at a Paint & Powder Musical revue rehearsal. In 1957, those two accidental scene partners became intentional ones and for 61 years until her death in 2018, the Don & Hildy duet, a long-running show of love & mutual admiration, wowed all in their audience and so-very-social circles.

When the two took their act on the road to small-town Maine, their friends and family were skeptical. Eagerly taking on the challenge as Superintendent Plant Manager of Ames’ Maine Spinning Company (a fine yarn mill in Skowhegan), Don wove managerial magic. He steadfastly made the mill, smack in the middle of town, the well-loved, hard-working heart of the community. As he recently wrote: “the Mill was where I spent the greatest part of my working career with some extraordinary people at this wonderful old building”.

In 1971, when most the New England textile mills were closed, Don was forced to turn the pages on this part of his professional life and bravely began “riding on a smile and a shoeshine” as a door-to-door salesman for World Book Encyclopedia, rising to Regional Manager. When the offer came from corporate to be transferred to their Chicago office, he knew what mattered most, declining the offer (and working even harder) so his family of five could continue to call Maine home. Throughout it all, Don’s unflagging energy and commitment to his community never wavered.

A Master Mason & member of Kora Shrine Temple (where he was also a spritely “Court of Jesters” inductee), Don’s other rituals included leading Troop 484 as Cub Scout Master and anchoring the Federated Church choir for 25 years. What’s more, history-buff Don took great pride in his local roles as President of The Bloomfield Academy Trustees; Chairman of the Civil-War era Skowhegan Free Public Library; Director of the Skowhegan Chamber of Commerce & Corporator of the Skowhegan Savings Bank. “Been-there-DON-that’ was certainly outstanding in many fields--especially the athletic fields. A pioneer in Maine soccer, Don the Referee racked up recognition & accolades traveling long, Maine miles as a high school & college referee (basketball, lacrosse, baseball, football, you-name-it!).

In between whistle-stops, he continued his winning ways as a salesman with National Chemsearch and tutored many grateful elementary students before (phew) “retiring”.

In 1991, he & Hildy flew the cooped-up Maine winters for the southern skies, making their second nest on Fripp Island, SC. Embracing island life, Don got just as busy building community there, too, serving in many helpful capacities as Community Center President, director of Road & Bridges, President of the Sawgrass Owners Association and a Fire Department & Sea Rescue volunteer. Yet, for all his “service,” the services he took part in as a chapel choir mainstay, will be most fondly remembered having gleefully lent his beautiful baritone to The Fripp Island Chapel choir for more than 30 years. For all who miss his steady voice & steadier presence going forward, we’re sure he’d now “Frankly” encourage us to “face the music … and dance”. And so we will.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lt. Colonel Richard Aldrich, of Hampton Falls, NH. Dandy Don is survived by three proud children: Donald Winthrop Aldrich, Jr. (and wife Maureen) of Cave Creek, AZ; Alison Andreasen (and husband Steve) of Portland, ME; and Nathan Dana Aldrich (and wife Kenya Barber) of Los Angeles, CA. In addition, he leaves behind five beloved grandchildren and four siblings: Dr. Joanne Aldrich & Susan Connor of Tewksbury, MA; Nathan Gary Aldrich of Salisbury, MA and Kenneth Aldrich of Austin, TX.

Memorial Celebrations will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 4th, 2025, at All Faith’s Chapel on Fripp Island, SC, and in August at the Hildreth Cemetery in Lowell, Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Fripp Island Friends of Music c/o Hildy Fund - 217 Tarpon Blvd. Fripp Island, SC 29920 https://www.frippfriendsofmusic.com/the-hildy-aldrich-memorial-fund.html
