Curtis Chapman Obituary (1951 - 2024) - Saint Helena Island, South Carolina

Joel Curtis Chapman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, November 9, 2024, surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. He was 72. Born on November 22, 1951, in Beaufort, SC, to the late Harold Chapman and Edith Blocker Chapman, Curtis was one of four sons. He is survived by his soul mate of 52 years, Cheryl Searson Chapman; two daughters, Riann Elizabeth Chapman (Robert Beattie) and Lauren Christy Chapman Lowe (Carlos Lowe); and four grandchildren, Joel Chapman Lowe, Gracen Aaliyah Lowe, Noah Blue Beattie, and Isla Gray Beattie. He is also survived by his brothers, Harold (Chuck) Chapman (Cynthia) and Michael Chapman (Donna), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. Curtis was preceded in death by his brother, Rick Chapman (Mary). Curtis was known for his sarcastic sense of humor, he had a knack for lightening any room with his sometimes cheeky, wit and colorful jokes that never failed to bring a smile. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved, leaving a lasting impression on all who crossed his path. A proud member of the Beaufort community, Curtis worked as a firefighter for the City of Beaufort before transitioning to Parker Hannifan Aerospace, where he and Cheryl spent 20 years working side by side. He then spent 14 years with Sodexo Food Services on Parris Island before retiring in 2018. Outside of his work life, Curtis had a deep passion for music, especially rock and roll. His love for The Beatles began in 1963 when he first heard "From Me to You", and this sparked a lifelong obsession with their music. Whether it was listening to his favorite tunes or playing guitar with friends, Curtis always found joy in the rhythm of life. He was also an avid sports fan, with a special place in his heart for the Carolina Panthers. Curtis and Cheryl’s love story began at the Beaufort Water Festival Street Dance in the summer of 1972, and for the next 52 years, they were inseparable. Their love, shared adventures, and deep bond were a testament to the life they built together. They enjoyed camping and cruising with their family, creating memories that will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. In the days to come, his family and friends will miss him deeply, but they will find solace knowing that Curtis has now had his long-awaited jam session with John and George. Though he is gone, his memory, humor, and love will continue to resonate in the lives he touched. A celebration of life will be held in his honor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The ASPCA, St. Jude Children's Hospital or a charity of your choice in Curtis's name. Rest in peace, Curtis. You will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.
