Captain Robert Roe Taylor, USN Retired, age 84, of Beaufort, SC, died on May 16, 2018 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. Captain Taylor was born on July 2, 1933 in Cincinnati, OH, the son of the late Robert Wiley Taylor and the late Margaret Roe Taylor. Robert was preceded in death by his first wife Joan Crocker Taylor, and brothers Stephen, Richard and Walter. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Gail Gates Taylor; daughters Laura de la Rosa (Jose), Margaret Smith (Mark), Mary Taylor, and Lindsay Koehler (Dan Ringers); eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated from Miami University (OH) in 1955. After graduation he was commissioned Ensign in the Supply Corps, USN, and served on several shipboard assignments. He received an MBA from Harvard University in 1966. He also served on several shore assignments with the naval nuclear propulsion program. After retiring from the Navy in 1974 as a Captain, he was employed by Burns & Roe, Inc. as Director of Contracts and Construction Management. He and Gail retired to Beaufort, SC in 1994. Robert was active at St. Helena's Church as a docent and cook, and was a board member of the Old Sheldon Trust for many years. He was a past Commander of the Beaufort Power Squadron, past president of the Thursday Club, and past treasurer and board member of the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Hospice Care of South Carolina or the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation.
