Captain Albert Lewis "Smiley" Schlegel, Jr., 25, a true World War II hero, who had been declared killed in action in 1944 after flying a mission over Valmy, France. His body remained interred in an American Cemetery in France until researchers confirmed theories that were consistent with Capt. Schlegel's military history. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 10 AM at Museum Chapel, National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in Pooler, with a flyover in the "missing man" formation at 11 AM. Interment will be held Thursday, March 30, 2017 at 10 AM at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors. Captain Schlegel is survived by his nephew, Perry Nuhn, Col., USAF, ret., and his wife, Ritamarie of Callawassie Island.
